It was here, in 2003, that a young Jamie watched Makybe Diva win the Melbourne Cup. More than two decades later, she walked back through the school gates carrying the same trophy she had once watched from afar.
“I could never have imagined that would ever happen,” Melham said.
The significance of the moment was not lost on the students, who gathered to see the Cup and hear from someone who had once walked the same halls.
For Melham, their excitement was just as moving.
“To see the kids’ faces when we walked in… that was nothing I could ever have imagined would happen to me,” she said.
Among the cheers and wide-eyed faces were young students dreaming about what their own futures might hold. Seeing a Melbourne Cup-winning jockey return to her former school offered a powerful reminder that big dreams can begin in the most familiar places.
For Melham, bringing the Cup home to Adelaide was about more than celebrating a victory. It was about sharing the moment with the community that helped shape her.
And for the students of Trinity College, it was a day they are unlikely to forget – a glimpse of what might be possible when a dream that once seemed out of reach becomes reality.
