Behind the win: James McDonald

For James McDonald, the Melbourne Cup was more than a race won. It was a childhood dream, a lifetime of ambition and a moment that, when it finally arrived, felt almost impossible to comprehend.

James McDonald had grown up idolising the race – its history, its champions and its place on the world stage. To simply earn a ride in the Melbourne Cup is an achievement. To win it is something altogether different.

When McDonald partnered with Verry Elleegant to victory, the significance of the moment was magnified by the relationship they had built in the lead-up. Everything had clicked. Then came those unforgettable final strides and, with them, a feeling McDonald had imagined since he was a boy.

“It’s one of the greatest feelings of all time.

Crossing the line, the reality of becoming a Melbourne Cup-winning jockey began to sink in.

“To have your first Melbourne Cup on the mantelpiece was just so surreal.”

Rather than rush away from the moment, McDonald allowed himself to savour it – returning slowly, goosebumps running through him, knowing he was experiencing something he wished could last forever.

Because the Melbourne Cup is more than a race. It is a dream shared by generations – and, for those fortunate enough to win it, a moment that stays with them for life.

“If you do ever get that chance to win it, it’s life changing.”
